Weirdest Rivers on Earth

After a huge gap, I am writing today. But let's be a little (or maybe totally) off-track today. I am discussing some of the weirdest rivers of Earth.

Rivers are meant to have blue- crystal clear water. That's what we are told, learnt and seen from our childhood days. Today I'm gonna tell about some rivers which are colored by nature's own artistic imagination. Some of them have also changed their color due to human activities too. Some of them have weird streamline! I'll discuss about 4 such wondering rivers...

  • Odeleite River, Portugal

This river is also famous as the Blue Dragon River of Portugal (well, the name blue dragon reminds me of a famous Anime series, XD)! Odeleite is a river located in the municipality of Castro MarimAlgarve, in Portugal. It originates in the mountains of the Serra de Caldeirao and flows through the municipalities Sao Bras de AlportelTaviraAlcoutimCastro Marim Faro district. Also, there is a water reservoir of the same name because of the dam created on the path of the river. Odeleite is a right tributary of the River GuadianaThe river is known "The Blue Dragon River" because of its dark blue color and unusual curvy shape, inspired by a photographer Steve Richards' picture taken during his a flight from CardiffWales, to Faro, Portugal.

  • Cano Crystales River, Columbia
According to some people, this is the most beautiful river on the planet. The river flows through the remote rocky and hilly locations of Columbia. Amazingly the river changes its color with change of seasons. Red, green, yellow, blue & black-- these five color plays with the river. The main creature responsible for such color changing is an algae named Macarenia clavigera .  This has become local Tourist Attraction too. But fearing the loss of biodiversity, tourists gathering has been limited to 200 per day only.

  • Rio Tinto, Spain

The Río Tinto is a river in southwestern Spain that rises in the Sierra Morena mountains of Andalusia. It flows generally south-southwest, reaching the Gulf of Cádiz at Huelva. The Rio Tinto river has a unique red and orange colour derived from its chemical makeup that is extremely acidic and with very high levels of iron and heavy metals.
The river maintains its colour for an approximate length of 50 kilometres. After the 50 kilometre mark, the chemistry that makes the Rio Tinto river so unique appears to slowly decline, as does the odd colouring. The location where the chemistry of the river is altered is near a town called Niebla. The river's chemistry begins to significantly change following the town of Niebla owing to the fact that the Rio Tinto blends itself with other streams that are connected to the Atlantic Ocean. The length of the river is approximately 100 km (62 mi) long and is located within the Iberian Pyrite Belt. This area has large amounts of ore and sulfide deposits.
Although the river represents a harsh environment for life, some microorganisms classified as extremophiles do thrive in these conditions. Such life forms include certain species bacteriaalgaeand heterotrophs.

  • Rio Negro, Brazil
The two largest tributary rivers of Amazon are Rio Negro and Solimoes. Both of the rivers have different colors, and where they meet together, their colors are never mixed. The two river meet each other near the Peru border, 10 km away from City of Manaus of Northern Brazil. The coffee colored stream is of Solimoes. Lots of sediments, mud etc carried from Amazon basin is responsible for its color. Rio Nrgro is black in color. It's hard to digest that Rio Negro doesn't carry any sedimentary deposits. According to European Space Agency (ESA), Rio Negro is one of the cleanest water river on the planet.
